Interior Feature Stairs
Mono-stringer, floating and open-riser stairs in blackened or painted steel, with wood, plate or grating treads. Risers and runs held to IRC limits so the stair passes inspection.
Commercial & Residential Steel
Fabricated steel stairs, handrails and guardrails for homes, shops and plants across Greater Houston. Welded in our shop to AWS D1.1, galvanized for Gulf humidity, and set by our own crews.

Service Overview
A stair that flexes underfoot or a guardrail that moves when you lean on it is a code problem. Houston adds a second problem, because Gulf humidity and salt air eat through bare steel and thin paint in a few seasons. Fabricated steel stairs and railings solve both, as long as the welds meet AWS D1.1 and the finish is hot-dip galvanizing or a real coating system. Jimenes Construction is a self-performing steel contractor in Houston, TX, with 23 years on this coast. Our own crew details, cuts, welds, coats and installs every assembly, from a single porch rail to a four-story egress stair tower.
We build both sides of the market. For homes that means interior feature stairs, exterior steel stairs, balcony and porch railings, and cable or picket infill. For commercial and industrial buildings it means egress stair towers, OSHA industrial stairs, ships ladders, and the handrails and guardrails that go with steel mezzanines and platforms and catwalks.
Code decides most of the design. Commercial guards stand 42 inches, residential guards 36 inches, and a 4-inch sphere cannot pass through the infill. Guards and handrails are designed for a 200 pound load pushed in any direction. We fabricate the full assembly in the shop, then anchor it to the slab or tie it into the structural steel frame in the field.
Coverage
Each of these is its own trade. We detail, weld and install all six in house.
Mono-stringer, floating and open-riser stairs in blackened or painted steel, with wood, plate or grating treads. Risers and runs held to IRC limits so the stair passes inspection.
Picket, cable and glass-channel infill on welded steel posts. Guards at 36 inches for homes, with the 4-inch sphere rule checked on the shop drawing.
Hot-dip galvanized stair towers and landings for apartments, offices and shops. Built to the IBC 7-inch rise and 11-inch run limits and rated for the exit width.
Graspable Type I and Type II handrails at 34 to 38 inches, 42-inch commercial guards, wall brackets and returns, all designed for the 200 pound concentrated load.
OSHA 1910.25 stairs, ships ladders and fixed ladders for plants along the Ship Channel, with bar grating treads, kickplates and midrails.
Re-treading corroded exterior stairs, replacing rusted stringers, and bringing short guardrails on older Houston buildings up to current height.
Our Process
Five steps, the same on a porch rail and on a four-story egress stair tower. Call (832) 576-3278 to start at step one.
We measure floor-to-floor height, landing space and openings on site, then confirm occupancy, rise and run limits and guard height before we price anything.
Stair and rail drawings show tread count, stringer size, infill spacing, anchor layout and finish. Nothing gets cut until the engineer or architect signs them.
Cut, fit and weld to AWS D1.1 by certified welders, with mill test reports kept on file. Exposed welds are ground smooth before the piece leaves the shop.
Outdoor work is hot-dip galvanized to ASTM A123. Interior work gets shop primer and a finish coat. We pick both finishes to match the exposure.
The assembly is anchored into the slab or bolted to the steel frame. We plumb and level it, then set the anchors. The inspector checks guard height, sphere spacing and load on site.

Engineering & Compliance
A stair carries people, so the numbers are not negotiable. Here is what we build to.
Why Jimenes
Stairs go wrong at the hand-off between a fabricator and an installer. We detail, weld, coat and set the same assembly, so a field dimension that misses is ours to fix.
Salt air and long humid summers find every thin spot in a paint film. We match the finish to the exposure, which usually means hot-dip galvanizing outdoors.
Riser height, tread depth, guard height and the 4-inch sphere all get verified on the shop drawing. Fixing a number on paper is free. Fixing it after install is a rebuild.
Stringers, treads, rail, infill, finish and field install each get their own line. You can see what cable infill costs against pickets, and change orders are signed before the work.
Credentials
Texas does not license general or steel contractors, so we send the insurance certificate, welder qualifications and mill test reports with every proposal. Here is what a steel stair and railing contractor in Houston can actually show you.
Where We Work
Headquartered in Houston and building steel stairs, handrails and guardrails across the Greater Houston area, from inside the 610 Loop out past the Grand Parkway. If you searched for a steel stair and railing fabricator near me and landed here, this is the radius we cover. We can field measure the same week.
Good Questions
Still not sure? Call and talk to the person who will build your stair.
Talk to a BuilderHeight depends on the building type and how the rail gets used. The rules we build to most days:
There is no flat rate, because a straight porch rail and a floating feature stair are different builds. Six things move the price: total rise and tread count, stringer type, infill (pickets, cable or glass), tread material, finish, and how hard the field install is. Hot-dip galvanizing costs more than paint up front and usually costs less over twenty years in this climate. Ask for the free written estimate. Every one of those items gets its own line, so you can compare options instead of guessing.
Bare or thinly painted steel will, and fast. Houston runs humid most of the year, and salt air reaches well inland from Galveston Bay. Our answer outdoors is hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123, which puts zinc through every weld, corner and inside face. Where a color is required we galvanize first, then add a primer and urethane topcoat. If your existing stairs are already flaking or losing stringer steel, see steel repair and field modifications, since a retread is often cheaper than a full replacement.
Yes, and they are a different standard from building stairs. OSHA 1910.25 sets stair angles between 30 and 50 degrees, with a maximum 9.5-inch riser and a minimum 9.5-inch tread. A ships ladder is steeper, 50 to 70 degrees, and is used where floor space will not allow a normal stair. We build all three with bar grating or checker plate treads, midrails and kickplates, most often for plants and warehouses in the Ship Channel and Grand Parkway corridors. They usually ship with catwalks or a mezzanine.
Usually yes for a structural stair, and often yes for a new guardrail on a commercial building. Inside city limits the permit comes from the City of Houston. Outside city limits it comes from Harris County, or from Fort Bend, Montgomery, Waller or Brazoria County. Commercial stairs are drawn and sealed by an engineer, and welds and high-strength bolting get checked by a third-party special inspector. East of SH 146 in Harris County, plus Galveston, Brazoria and Chambers counties, exterior steel also falls in the TDI windstorm catastrophe area and needs WPI-8 documentation. Texas licenses no general or steel contractor, so ask any bidder for the insurance certificate and welder qualifications instead. We pull the permit and book the inspections.
Yes. Most of our work lands on a slab, a porch or a stair landing that is already there. We core drill or set epoxy and wedge anchors to the size and embedment on the shop drawing, then check them before we load the stair. If the concrete under the anchors is cracked, spalled or too thin to hold, we say so before install. Our concrete foundations and concrete slabs crews can build the landing first. Bigger frames tie into the building steel instead, which is covered under steel erection. Call (832) 576-3278 and we will come look at it.
