Service Overview

Concrete Sidewalks Built for Houston Feet and Houston Clay

Houston sidewalks fail for reasons you can predict. Tree roots chase water and lift the panels. The expansive clay underneath swells and shrinks through 52 inches of rain a year. Walks poured without control joints crack and heave. That trip hazard becomes a liability on your property. A sidewalk built right holds its line through all of it. For 23 years Jimenes Construction has poured concrete sidewalks and walkways with our own crews, engineered for Houston clay. The grade, the joints and the finish are on us and nobody else.

We fix it at the cause. Our crew grades the path and isolates it from roots and driveways. We saw the joints and pour the walk to drain. Nothing is brokered out to a flatwork sub, so the slope and the finish stay right end to end. We pour public sidewalks in the City of Houston right-of-way to the city standard and permit. We also pour private walkways from your driveway to your door. Both are built to last on ground that moves.

If a root has already lifted your walk, we grind, cut and replace the panels and set a barrier so it stays level. And if you need a concrete driveway or an ADA-compliant ramp tied into the run, one crew handles the whole job.

Coverage

Sidewalk & Walkway Types We Pour

Each of these has its own rules. We grade, form and pour all six in house.

Public Right-of-Way Sidewalks

New and replacement sidewalks in the City of Houston right-of-way, poured to the city sidewalk standard with a permit and a final inspection.

Private Home Walkways

Front walks, side yards and garden paths from the driveway to the door, jointed and pitched to carry water off the concrete and away from the house.

ADA Ramps & Curb Ramps

Curb ramps with the right running slope, flared sides and detectable warning panels at every street crossing. See our ADA walkways page.

Commercial Walkways & Plazas

Storefront walks, courtyard paths and connectors between parking and door, built to hold foot traffic and pass a commercial ADA review.

Trip-Hazard & Panel Repair

Grinding, cutting and replacing lifted or cracked panels so the walk is level and the liability is gone. See concrete repair.

Decorative & Finished Walks

Broom, exposed aggregate and stamped paths where the walk is part of the yard. Ask about our decorative concrete finishes.

Our Process

Our Sidewalk & Walkway Process

Five steps, the same on a short front walk and on a full block of public sidewalk. Call (832) 576-3278 to start at step one.

  1. 01

    Walk & Measure

We walk the route, mark the width and slope, and note the trees, meters and driveways the walk has to work around before we price it.

  2. 02

    Permit & ADA Layout

For a right-of-way walk we pull the City of Houston permit. We set the line and grade to ADA width, running slope and cross-slope, and mark ramp locations.

  3. 03

    Grade, Form & Isolate

We cut the subgrade, compact it, and set forms to the finish grade. Root barriers and expansion joints keep the walk separate from trees and driveways.

  4. 04

    Steel & Pour

Wire mesh or rebar goes in on chairs, then one clean pour. We finish for grip, tool the edges, and set detectable warning panels at the ramps.

  5. 05

    Joint, Cure & Inspect

We saw the control joints on schedule and cure the surface. Then we meet the city inspector on site for the final sign-off before we pull the forms.

  • Running slope 5 percent or less
  • Cross-slope 2 percent or less
  • Detectable warning domes at ramps

Permit & Sign-Off

Why Jimenes

Why Choose
Jimenes Construction

One Crew, One Finish

The same crew grades, forms, pours and finishes your walk. No flatwork sub means the slope, the joints and the broom finish all match end to end.

We Plan for Roots

Most Houston sidewalks fail at a tree. We map the roots first, then isolate the walk with barriers and joints so it stays level and stays off your liability list.

ADA Done Right

We check width, running slope, cross-slope and detectable warnings with a level. Your walk passes the ADA review the first time.

Line-Item Pricing

Demo, grading, forms, steel, concrete and ramps each get their own line. You see what you pay for, and change orders are signed before the work.

Do I need a permit to pour a sidewalk in Houston?

For a public sidewalk in the City of Houston right-of-way, yes. The right-of-way is the strip between your property line and the street, and the city owns it, so a permit and a final inspection are required. A private walkway on your own lot, like a front walk to the door, usually does not need a permit. We pull the right-of-way permit for you and meet the inspector on site. If you are also tying in a driveway approach, that piece has its own permit too.

How much does a concrete sidewalk cost in Houston?

There is no flat rate, because the price rides on length, width, tree roots and whether it is a permitted right-of-way walk. A short private front walk prices very differently from 300 feet of public sidewalk with curb ramps. We do not publish a price per foot, because a number given before we see the route is a guess. Ask for the free written estimate. Each part gets its own line: demo, grading, forms, steel, concrete and any ramps.

A tree root lifted my sidewalk. Can you fix the trip hazard?

Yes, and this is the most common Houston sidewalk call we get. A lifted panel is a trip hazard and a liability, and grinding alone often does not last if the root keeps growing. We usually do one of these:

  • Grind a small lip flush for a quick, low-cost fix
  • Cut and replace the lifted panels at the right grade
  • Add a root barrier so the new walk stays level
For cracked or spalled concrete beyond a lifted panel, see our concrete repair and restoration page.

Does my walkway have to be ADA-compliant?

A private front walk to your own door does not fall under the ADA. A public sidewalk or a commercial walkway does. That means a clear width of at least 36 inches. The running slope has to be 5 percent or less, and the cross-slope 2 percent or less. Every curb ramp needs detectable warning domes. We check all of it with a level before we pour. Our ADA walkways page covers ramps and detectable warnings in detail.

How long before I can walk on a new sidewalk?

Foot traffic is usually fine in about 24 hours, once the surface has set hard. Give it a bit longer in cool or wet weather. The concrete keeps gaining strength and reaches full design strength at 28 days, so keep heavy loads and vehicles off until then. On a driveway crossing we pour a thicker 6 inch section and ask you to wait about a week before driving on it.

Why does Houston concrete crack, and how do you stop it?

Two reasons here: concrete shrinks as it cures, and the clay under it swells and shrinks with our 52 inches of rain a year. We cannot stop shrinkage, so we control it. We saw joints at set spacing so cracks land in the joints where you will not see them. We isolate the walk from driveways and slabs with expansion joints. And we pour on a compacted subgrade. If a walk has already broken up, call (832) 576-3278 and we will look at whether it is a repair or a replacement. If that same movement is cracking the slab under your house, see foundation repair in Houston.
