Service Overview

Concrete Patios Built for Houston Backyards

Concrete patios in Houston take a beating that a slab up north never sees. Gulf humidity, hard afternoon downpours, and clay that swells and shrinks with the weather all push on a flat outdoor slab. A patio poured on a thin base soon cracks or holds water against the house. Jimenes Construction is a self-performing concrete contractor with 23 years pouring flatwork on Houston clay. We form, pour and finish every patio with our own crew, built to shed water and hold its shape in this climate.

The finish is where you get a say. We pour broom, stamped and exposed-aggregate finishes, and we can dress one up with decorative concrete color and pattern. Wrapping a pool? See our pool deck page. Tying the patio to the drive? See concrete driveways. Every one is self-performed by our own crew. The person who grades your base is the same person who trowels the slab.

The clay under most of Houston swells when it rains and shrinks when it dries, and near your footings that movement is a real problem. Over 23 years of pouring on this ground, we have learned to slope every patio away from the house. We also cut an isolation joint at the wall. That lets the slab move on its own without pushing on the foundation. If the house has already moved, with cracks or sticking doors inside, see our residential foundation repair page.

Coverage

Concrete Patio Types We Pour

Each finish is its own craft. We form, pour and finish all six in house.

Broom-Finish Patios

The workhorse patio. A brushed, non-slip surface that stays cool underfoot and holds up to Houston sun and heavy rain. Clean, simple and the best value.

Stamped Concrete Patios

One slab stamped and colored to look like stone, brick or wood plank. Fewer joints than pavers, so weeds and fire ants have nowhere to move in.

Exposed Aggregate Patios

Washed to reveal the stone in the mix for grip and texture. A good pick around wet zones and shaded, humid corners of the yard.

Colored & Stained Patios

Integral color, acid stain or a bordered pattern for an outdoor room that matches the house. Finished with our decorative concrete crew.

Covered Patios & Slab Extensions

Thickened-edge slabs with footings sized to carry a patio cover, pergola or screen room, poured to the post layout your builder needs.

Grill Pads & Fire-Pit Slabs

Small outdoor-kitchen and fire-feature pads poured with the patio, with sleeves for gas and power set before the concrete goes down.

Our Process

Our Concrete Patio Process

Five steps, the same on a small grill pad and on a wrap-around outdoor room. Call (832) 576-3278 to start at step one.

  1. 01

    Site Walk & Drainage Plan

We walk the yard and check the fall away from the house. Then we mark where rain sheds now, so the new patio keeps water off your foundation.

  2. 02

    Line-Item Estimate

A written quote tied to the finish you picked: square footage, slab thickness, fiber or rebar, base depth, joint layout, color and sealer.

  3. 03

    Permit Check, Layout & Grade

We confirm setbacks and any permit, then set string lines and cut the grade. The pad gets sloped so water runs out to the yard.

  4. 04

    Forms, Base & Steel

Forms braced, a compacted base built, and an isolation joint set at the house. Then fiber or rebar goes in to hold the slab together on moving clay.

  5. 05

    Pour, Finish & Cure

One continuous pour, floated and finished broom, stamped or exposed. Control joints sawn, then we cure and seal it for Houston humidity.

Engineering & Compliance

Materials, Methods & Code Compliance

Houston clay and Gulf rain are hard on a flat slab. We build the patio to handle both.

Soils & Drainage

  • Sloped away from the house, about 1/4 inch per foot
  • Isolation joint at the wall so the slab moves alone
  • Compacted base over expansive clay
  • French drain or regrade where water pools

Mix & Materials

  • 3,000 to 4,000 psi patio mixes
  • Fiber mesh or Grade 60 rebar on a chair
  • Integral color or stain for decorative work
  • Penetrating sealer for humidity and heat

Code & Standards

  • City of Houston setback and lot-coverage checks
  • Harris County rules outside city limits
  • Control joints sawn to head off shrinkage cracks
  • Gas and power sleeves to code before the pour

Finish & Cure

  • Broom, stamped or exposed-aggregate finish
  • Sawn joints on a grid to control cracking
  • Wet cure or cure compound in Houston heat
  • Sealed once cured, walk-on in a day or two

Why Jimenes

Why Choose
Jimenes Construction

One Crew, Base to Finish

The same crew grades the base, sets the forms and finishes the slab. Nothing gets brokered out, so the finish is even and the details match.

We Slope It Off Your House

Most patio trouble here is water sitting against the foundation. We build the fall in and cut an isolation joint at the wall on every patio we pour.

Finishes Done Right

Broom, stamped and exposed take timing and a practiced hand in Houston heat. Our finishers do this daily, so the color is even and the texture is right.

Line-Item Patio Pricing

Slab, base, steel, color and sealer each get their own line. You see what you are paying for, and change orders are signed before the work.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Houston?

There is no flat rate, because two patios the same size can price very differently. The number moves with size, slab thickness, and the finish you pick. A plain broom patio costs the least. Stamped, colored and exposed-aggregate patios cost more because they take extra steps. These four items also add to the price:

  • Tearing out and hauling an old patio
  • Drainage work, like a regrade or a French drain
  • Post footings for a patio cover
  • Gas or power sleeves for an outdoor kitchen
We do not publish a price per square foot, since a number given before we see your yard is a guess. Ask for the free written estimate, with every line spelled out. Want a fancier look? Our decorative concrete page shows the color and pattern options.

How long does it take to pour a backyard patio?

A standard broom patio takes about four to seven days from first cut to finish. Stamped and colored patios run one to two weeks because coloring, sealing and detail work add days. You can put light foot traffic on it in a day or two. Move furniture back after about a week, and the slab keeps gaining strength up to 28 days. Weather matters here. We do not pour into a storm window, and hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30.

Broom, stamped or exposed aggregate: which patio finish is right?

It comes down to look, grip and budget.

  • Broom: brushed, non-slip, best value, stays cool
  • Stamped: looks like stone, brick or wood, fewer joints than pavers
  • Exposed aggregate: stone showing through for grip in wet, shaded spots
Broom is the workhorse. Stamped gives you the high-end look on one solid slab. Exposed handles humidity and shade well. If the patio meets a pool, we match the finish on our pool deck page. To coat or refresh an existing slab, see concrete coatings.

Will my concrete patio crack on Houston clay?

Hairline cracks can happen, because concrete shrinks as it cures and Houston clay swells and shrinks with the weather. We keep those cracks in check three ways. We build a compacted base. We saw control joints on a grid so any crack follows the joint. We add fiber or rebar to hold the slab together. We also cut an isolation joint where the patio meets the house, so the slab can move without pushing on your foundation. If an old patio has already cracked or heaved, see concrete repair and restoration.

Do I need a permit for a concrete patio in Houston?

A ground-level patio slab often does not need a building permit. Setbacks and lot-coverage limits still apply. A patio cover or screen room usually does need a permit. Rules differ inside City of Houston limits and in Harris County or your HOA. We check the requirements for your address before we start. If your project ties into the driveway or a walkway, see concrete driveways and sidewalks and walkways. We handle any permit and inspection that applies.

Is a concrete patio or pavers better in Houston?

Both work, but a poured patio has real advantages on our clay and in our rain. A concrete slab has far fewer joints than pavers, so weeds and fire ants have fewer places to move in. There are no bricks to settle and go uneven. Stamped concrete gives you the paver look on one solid slab you can sweep and hose off. Pavers are easy to lift for a repair, but they shift more as the clay moves. Call (832) 576-3278 and we will walk your yard and tell you straight which one fits.
