Service Overview

Concrete Driveways Built for Houston Clay

A cracked, sunken driveway on Houston clay almost always failed underneath the slab. South of Interstate 10 the soil swells after every storm and shrinks in the August heat. A thin slab poured on a skipped base cracks and settles within a season or two. Tree roots lift one side while the far corner drops. A concrete driveway built right fixes that for good. Jimenes Construction is a self-performing concrete contractor in Houston. For 23 years our own crew has graded the base, set the steel and finished the slab in one pass, sized for how much this clay moves.

Under the concrete is where a driveway is won or lost. There is no hand-off between a form sub and a finish crew, so nothing slips between the graded base and the last broom pass. We reinforce for the clay, thicken the edges and slope the drive to carry water away from your house so it stays flat.

We pour for homeowners, builders and commercial owners, from straight residential drives and circular drives to street aprons and heavy shop approaches. Need a matching walk or patio? We also pour sidewalks and walkways and concrete patios on the same job. For more curb appeal see our decorative concrete options, and if your old drive is already broken, start with concrete repair and restoration.

Coverage

Concrete Driveway Types We Pour

Each of these is its own job. We grade, form, pour and finish all six in house.

Residential Concrete Driveways

Standard home driveways poured 4 to 6 inches thick over a compacted base, reinforced with rebar or fiber and sloped to move water away from the slab and foundation.

Broom-Finish Driveways

The workhorse Houston finish. A light broom texture gives good grip in the rain and hides normal wear, poured for a clean, low-cost drive that lasts.

Exposed-Aggregate & Stamped Drives

Washed stone or stamped patterns for a driveway with more curb appeal. Sealed to hold color in the Houston sun. Pairs with our decorative concrete work.

Driveway Aprons & Culvert Tie-Ins

The apron between the street and your slab sits in the city right-of-way. We pull the City of Houston driveway permit and set the culvert and grade the ditch to code.

Wide, Circular & RV Driveways

Extra-wide drives, circular drives and thickened RV or boat pads, with control joints laid out to match the shape so cracks fall where we choose.

Commercial Drives & Approaches

Thickened, heavily reinforced approaches, fire lanes and truck aprons for shops, offices and light industrial sites along the Grand Parkway and Ship Channel corridors.

Our Process

Our Concrete Driveway Process

Five steps, the same on a home driveway and on a commercial approach. Call (832) 576-3278 to start at step one.

  1. 01

    Site Walk & Drainage Check

We walk the drive and check the fall of the lot. We look for trees and roots, then find where water needs to go. All of that happens before we price a thing.

  2. 02

    Line-Item Estimate

A written quote by the line: thickness, square footage, rebar or fiber, finish, apron work and any tear-out of the old slab.

  3. 03

    Permit, Apron & Layout

We pull the City of Houston driveway or culvert permit for work in the right-of-way, then stake the slope, width and joint layout.

  4. 04

    Grade, Form & Steel

Old slab out, base graded and compacted, edges thickened, forms braced, then rebar or fiber set and the fall checked one more time.

  5. 05

    Pour, Finish & Cure

One clean pour, screeded and floated, then broomed, exposed or stamped. Control joints sawn early and cure applied so it sets hard and flat.

Why Jimenes

Why Choose
Jimenes Construction

One Crew, Base to Finish

The same crew grades the base, sets the forms and finishes the slab. Nothing gets lost between a form sub and a finish crew.

We Build for the Clay

Most cracked drives here failed underneath, where the base was thin or never compacted. We reinforce the slab, thicken the edges and slope it to drain so it stays flat.

We Handle the Apron Permit

The apron at the street sits in the city right-of-way. We pull the City of Houston driveway or culvert permit so the tie-in passes.

Line-Item Driveway Pricing

Thickness, square footage, steel, finish and tear-out each get their own line. You see what you are paying for, and change orders are signed first.

Talk to a Builder
(832) 576-3278
How much does a concrete driveway cost in Houston?

There is no flat rate, because a 400 square foot drive and a wide circular one price two different ways. Five things move the concrete driveway cost:

  • Square footage and thickness
  • Rebar mat or fiber reinforcement
  • Finish: broom, exposed-aggregate or stamped
  • Tear-out and haul of the old slab
  • Apron, culvert and drainage work at the street
We do not publish a price per square foot, because a number given before we see the lot is a guess. Ask for the free written estimate instead. Every one of those items gets its own line.

How long does a new concrete driveway take?

A standard home driveway is usually 3 to 5 days from tear-out to the finished pour. Wide, circular or decorative drives run 1 to 2 weeks. You can walk on it in about a day, but keep cars off for 7 days. Concrete reaches full strength at 28 days. A stamped or decorative drive needs extra time to seal.

How thick should a driveway be, and does it need rebar?

For a home driveway we pour 4 to 6 inches over a compacted base. Truck approaches and RV pads get 6 inches. On Houston clay we reinforce with a Grade 60 rebar mat or fiber, thicken the edges, and saw control joints to steer where cracks form. Thickness alone does not stop cracks. The base, the steel and the joints do the real work.

Do I need a permit for a driveway in Houston?

The slab on your own property usually does not, but the apron between the street and your lot sits in the city right-of-way and does. We pull the City of Houston driveway or culvert permit for that tie-in, and Harris County Engineering handles county roads. The permit sets the apron width, the ditch grade and how it meets the sidewalk. We handle it so the work passes.

Why does my old concrete driveway keep cracking?

In Houston the cause is usually under the slab. The clay swells and shrinks with the weather, tree roots lift one side, and water pooling against the slab softens the base. A thin drive on a poor base cracks fast. We fix the base, thicken the edges and slope it to drain. If your current drive is only chipped or spalled, see concrete repair and restoration before you replace the whole thing. If the same clay movement has doors sticking or cracks showing inside the house, see slab foundation repair.

Do you repair or replace old driveways in Houston?

Yes, we do both, and we will tell you which one your drive needs before we quote. Driveway repair fits a slab that is still sound but chipped, spalled or cracked on the surface. Our concrete repair and restoration crew handles that. Driveway replacement fits a slab that has sunk, heaved or broken apart because the base failed under it. We tear out and haul the old slab, which adds a day or two. Then we fix the base, set the steel and pour a new drive sloped to drain. A standard home driveway runs 3 to 5 days from tear-out to the finished pour.

What driveway finishes can you pour, and which lasts in Houston?

We pour three main finishes:

  • Broom finish: the low-cost workhorse, good grip in the rain
  • Exposed aggregate: washed stone for texture and color
  • Stamped concrete: patterns that mimic stone or brick
All three last when sealed and drained right. Exposed and stamped drives need a resealing every few years to hold color in the Houston sun. See our decorative concrete page for patterns, and ask us to match a new patio or walkway on the same visit.
