Service Overview

Curbs & Gutters Built to Drain Houston

On Houston's flat clay, a curb and gutter line is drainage work. Set at the wrong grade, a curb ponds water in the parking lot and backs it up at the door. A gutter pan that is too shallow or a ramp out of slope fails inspection. Jimenes Construction forms and machine-extrudes curb, gutter and ADA ramps that grade water to the inlets and detention ponds. Our own crews pour every foot. Houston gets almost 52 inches of rain a year, so twenty-three years on these sites has us building every curb for the storm and to the code.

That includes valley gutters and continuous curb-and-gutter for parking lots, subdivisions and city jobs. Our own crew sets the string line, drills the dowels and runs the machine or the forms. We shape the gutter so every foot falls toward an inlet or a detention pond. There are no brokered curb subs and no hand-offs to a separate finish crew, so the flow line is right the first time.

Curb rarely travels alone. We tie it into parking lot paving and run gutter to trench and slot drains at low points. We also pour the ADA curb ramps and sidewalks that the curb line connects.

Coverage

Curb & Gutter Types We Pour

Each of these is its own setup. We string, form and pour all six in house.

Parking Lot Curb & Gutter

Continuous curb-and-gutter around lots and drive lanes. We grade it so runoff sheets to the gutter pan and out to the inlets, away from the storefront.

Standard & Roll Curbs

Barrier curb, roll-over curb and monolithic curb for streets, medians and drives, formed to City of Houston and TxDOT sections.

Valley & Cross Gutters

Concrete valley gutters and cross gutters that carry water across a drive or intersection to the next inlet without ponding on the pavement.

Extruded & Machine-Laid Curb

Slip-form curb run with a curb machine for long, fast, uniform lines on large lots and subdivision streets.

ADA Curb Ramps & Cuts

Detectable-warning ramps and curb cuts poured to PROWAG running and cross slopes so the site passes the accessibility inspection.

Subdivision & Municipal Curbing

Curb and gutter for new streets and public work, tied to the civil plan, drainage criteria and the county or city standard detail.

Our Process

Our Curb & Gutter Process

Five steps, the same on a subdivision street and on a four-thousand foot parking lot. Call (832) 576-3278 to start at step one.

  1. 01

    Site Walk & Drainage Plan

We read the civil plan and shoot the grades. Then we trace how water should flow to each inlet and detention pond, before we price a single foot of curb.

  2. 02

    Line-Item Estimate

A quote tied to the plan. Linear feet by curb type, subgrade prep, dowels or tie bars. Gutter width, ADA ramp count and psi. Every item gets its own line.

  3. 03

    Subgrade & String Line

Permit pulled with Houston or your county. Subgrade cut and compacted. Then we set the string line and grade so the finished flow line matches the plan.

  4. 04

    Form or Extrude & Pour

Dowels drilled into the pavement. Curb formed or run with the machine. Gutter pan shaped and screeded. We place a low slump mix that holds the profile.

  5. 05

    Finish, Cure & Sign-Off

Joints tooled, curb cured and backfilled, ADA slopes checked with a level, then the city or county inspection and closeout.

Engineering & Compliance

Materials, Methods & Code Compliance

A curb is a drainage detail on Houston clay. We build it to the flow line on the plan and the section the code calls for.

Soils & Site

  • Subgrade proof-rolled and compacted before curb
  • Houston clay swells and shrinks with the weather
  • Wet subgrade dried or stabilized first
  • Flow line graded to inlets and detention ponds

Mix & Materials

  • 3,000 to 4,000 psi curb and gutter mixes
  • Low slump machine mix that holds the profile
  • Grade 60 dowels and tie bars into the pavement
  • Curing compound applied at finish

Code & Standards

  • City of Houston Infrastructure Design Manual
  • TxDOT curb and gutter standard details
  • PROWAG and ADA ramp slope limits
  • Harris County drainage criteria on flow

Inspection & Sign-Off

  • Subgrade and grade check before the pour
  • ADA ramp slopes verified with a level
  • City or county curb inspection scheduled
  • Closeout with as-built flow line

Why Jimenes

Why Choose
Jimenes Construction

One Crew, String Line to Sign-Off

No brokered curb sub, no separate finish crew. Our own crew grades, drills dowels, runs the machine and forms, so the flow line is right the first time.

Drainage Is the Whole Job

In flood-prone Houston a curb that ponds water is a failed curb. We grade every foot toward an inlet or detention pond, then check it before we pour.

ADA Ramps Poured to Slope

Curb ramps get missed by eye and caught by the inspector. We shoot the running and cross slopes to PROWAG and hand you ramps that pass.

Line-Item Curb Pricing

Linear feet by type, subgrade, dowels and ramps each get their own line. You see what the curb costs and change orders are signed before the work.

How much does curb and gutter cost in Houston?

There is no flat rate, and two lots of the same size can price very differently. Curb and gutter cost is driven by the linear feet, the curb type, the subgrade the plan calls for, the number of ADA ramps and the drainage design. We do not publish a price per linear foot, because a number given before we see the civil plan is a guess. Ask for the free written estimate instead, where each item gets its own line. If the curb ties into new paving, the parking lot paving page covers that side of the cost.

What is the difference between curb and gutter and a valley gutter?

Curb and gutter runs along the edge of a lot or street. The curb holds the pavement edge and the gutter pan carries water to the inlets. A valley gutter, or cross gutter, runs across a drive or intersection to move water from one side to the other without ponding on the pavement. We pour both, and at low points we tie the gutter into trench and slot drains where a surface inlet is not enough.

How long does a curb and gutter job take in Houston?

A subdivision curb run of 500 to 2,000 feet is usually 3 to 7 days. A full parking lot curb-and-gutter runs 1 to 2 weeks, and a municipal or TxDOT section over 3,000 feet can run 2 to 4 weeks. Wet clay subgrade, the permit queue and hurricane-season storms move those numbers. We hand you dated start and finish windows when you sign the contract.

Do you build ADA curb ramps to code?

Yes. We shoot the running slope and the cross slope, then pour the detectable-warning ramps to PROWAG and ADA limits. We check every one with a level before the inspector does. Ramps get missed by eye and caught at inspection, so we measure them. See our ADA walkways and ramps page for the full accessibility scope, including the sidewalks the ramps connect to.

Is extruded curb or formed curb better?

It depends on the run. Extruded, or machine-laid, curb is fast and uniform, which suits long parking lot edges and subdivision streets. Formed curb is better for tight radii, transitions, valley gutters and short sections where a machine cannot reach. We run both, so we pick the method the plan and the layout call for.

Do curbs and gutters need a permit in Houston?

Public and commercial curb work does. Inside city limits it goes through the City of Houston, and the Infrastructure Design Manual sets the curb sections and drainage. Outside city limits the permit comes from the Harris County Engineering Department, with the county drainage criteria on flow. The flow line has to send water to the inlets and detention, so the grade is part of the review. We pull the permit and book the inspection. Call (832) 576-3278 and send us the civil plan.
