Service Overview

Concrete Steps Built for Houston Ground

Concrete steps fail in Houston when they are set on nothing but dirt. Our expansive clay swells and shrinks through every wet and dry season. Steps that only rest on the soil lean forward, crack and pull away from the house, until the top step leaves a lip that catches your toe. Poured steps done right stop that for good. Jimenes Construction is a self-performing concrete contractor with 23 years on Houston clay. Our own crew forms, sets steel, pours and finishes every set. We dowel the steps into the porch and set them on drilled piers below the active zone, so they move with the house.

We build every set to code, with risers kept even to within an eighth of an inch so no single step surprises your foot. Every tread gets a broom or non-slip finish that holds grip through Houston rain. On raised floodplain lots we run the top step up to the finished floor the flood rules require. The result is an entry that stays level, passes inspection and does not hand you a trip hazard a year later.

Steps rarely come alone. They tie into a walkway, a porch slab or a driveway, and the whole entry has to drain and match. If your current steps have already cracked or settled, start on our concrete repair and restoration page. New steps that connect to a new porch or slab often run with our concrete foundation work.

Coverage

Concrete Step Types We Pour

Every set is formed and finished in house. Here are the six we pour most in Houston.

Front Porch & Entry Steps

Poured steps up to the front door, tied to the porch slab and pier-supported so the whole entry stays level on Houston clay.

Stoops & Landings

Single steps and small landings at side and back doors, sloped to drain away from the house through our 52 inches of yearly rain.

Pier-Supported Steps

Steps set on drilled piers below the active zone, so they do not tip or pull away from the wall when the clay swells and shrinks.

Stair Flights with Handrail

Taller flights of four or more risers with a graspable handrail and guard, formed to code for porches, decks and split-level entries.

Flood-Elevation Entry Steps

Step runs that reach a raised finished floor on Harris County floodplain homes, where fill is banned and the house sits high.

Step Repair & Resurface

Rebuilds, mud-jacking and overlays for cracked, spalled or settled steps that are still worth saving.

Our Process

Our Concrete Step Process

Five steps, the same on a single stoop and on a tall porch flight. Call (832) 576-3278 to start at step one.

  1. 01

    Site Walk & Measure

We measure the total rise from grade to the finished floor, check drainage and access, and count the risers and treads the code allows.

  2. 02

    Estimate & Code Check

A line-item quote with riser height, tread depth, pier count, psi and handrail spec, all set to the IRC before any concrete is ordered.

  3. 03

    Forms, Piers & Elevation

Piers drilled below the active zone, forms built and braced, and the top step set to the porch or the flood elevation on raised homes.

  4. 04

    Steel, Pour & Finish

Rebar tied and doweled into the wall, one clean pour, then a broom or non-slip finish so the treads shed rain and hold grip.

  5. 05

    Handrail, Cure & Sign-Off

Handrail and guard set where four or more risers require it, the concrete cured, the site cleaned, and the work walked with you.

Engineering & Compliance

Materials, Methods & Code Compliance

Steps sit where the clay moves most. We build them to stay level and to pass the inspector.

Soils & Site

  • Houston clay swells and shrinks with the weather
  • Active zone of 8 to 20 feet drives our pier depth
  • Steps set on drilled piers below the fill
  • Doweled into the porch so they move as one piece

Mix & Materials

  • 3,500 to 4,000 psi structural mix
  • Grade 60 rebar tied through the risers
  • Broom or non-slip finish for wet treads
  • Steel or aluminum handrail where required

Code & Standards

  • Riser height 4 to 7.75 inches, kept uniform
  • Tread depth at least 10 to 11 inches
  • Handrail on any flight with 4 or more risers
  • Top step meets the floodplain finished floor

Inspection & Sign-Off

  • Riser and tread measured before the pour
  • Handrail height and grip checked to the IRC
  • City of Houston or county inspection booked
  • Work walked with you at closeout

Why Choose
Jimenes Construction

One Crew, Start to Finish

The same crew forms, drills, sets steel, pours and finishes your steps. Nothing gets brokered out to the lowest bidder.

We Build for the Clay

Most failed steps in Houston tipped because they only rested on the dirt. We set ours on piers and dowel them to the house so they hold.

Code Steps, No Trip Hazards

Uneven risers are the top cause of falls on steps. We keep every riser within an eighth of an inch, so no step surprises your foot.

Line-Item Pricing

Piers, forms, steel, finish and handrail each get their own line. You see what you are paying for, and change orders are signed first.

How much do concrete steps cost in Houston?

There is no flat rate, because a single stoop and a six-riser porch flight price two different ways. Five things move the concrete steps cost:

  • The total rise from grade to the door, which sets the number of risers
  • Whether the steps sit on drilled piers or on a slab
  • Rebar, mix strength and the finish you pick
  • A handrail, required once you have four or more risers
  • Any tie-in to a new walkway, porch or driveway
We do not quote a price per step over the phone. Ask for the free written estimate and every item gets its own line.

Why do concrete steps pull away from the house in Houston?

Because the clay under them moves. When steps only rest on loose dirt, the soil swells and shrinks with the weather and tips them away from the wall. We drill piers below the active zone, which local engineers put at about 8 to 20 feet, and we dowel the steps into the porch or foundation. That way the steps and the house move as one piece. If your steps have already settled, see our concrete repair and restoration page. If the porch or the house has settled with them, that is house foundation repair.

What are the code rules for risers, treads and handrails?

The building code keeps steps safe and even. On a home in Houston the rules land like this:

  • Each riser is 4 to 7.75 inches tall, and every riser in a flight stays within 3/8 inch of the others
  • Each tread is at least 10 to 11 inches deep
  • Any flight with four or more risers needs a graspable handrail
We measure the total rise first, then divide it into equal risers so no single step catches your foot.

How long does it take to pour concrete steps?

A single stoop can be formed and poured in one to three days. A front porch flight usually runs three to five days, and pier-supported steps on clay take five to eight. Fresh concrete takes light foot traffic in a day or two and reaches full strength at 28 days. Steps that tie into a new porch or foundation pour wait on that work, and we hand you a dated schedule at contract.

Can you repair or resurface my existing concrete steps?

Often, yes. If the steps are sound but cracked, spalled or a little low, we can mud-jack them back up, patch the edges or add an overlay. If they have broken apart or pulled well away from the house, a rebuild on piers lasts longer and costs less over time. We will tell you which one your steps need. See concrete repair and restoration for more.

Do concrete steps need a permit in Houston?

It depends on the scope. A simple like-for-like step repair usually does not, but new steps tied to a porch, a raised floodplain entry or a structural change often do. Inside the city the permit comes from the City of Houston; outside city limits it comes from the county. On floodplain homes the top step has to reach the finished floor set by the flood rules. We handle the permit and book the inspection so you do not have to chase it. Call (832) 576-3278 and we will sort it out.
